Brum v London Street Food Battle

Digbeth Dining Club takes on London in UK’s first ever street food battle!

One of the UK’s most popular street events team, Digbeth Dining Club, will be celebrating its 6th Birthday by ‘battling’ it out with London’s KERB to prove who holds the Street Food Crown this summer.

The head-to-head event will be pitching sixteen of the strongest and tastiest street food traders in Europe on Saturday, 11th August so diners can vote with their feet, and their taste buds, to see which city comes out on top.

The milestone event will be taking place at the Digbeth open-air Arena for the Street Food Battle of the decade.

Forming part of “Team BHX” includes the two-time British Street Food Awards finalist and 2016’s winner, Buddha Belly, along with two-time Wing Fest champion and now restaurateurs, Wingmans, Greek BBQ experts: Street Souvlaki and the Bournville Waffle Company.

Also competing for Birmingham is former Masterchef finalist, Pete Hewitt – whose business ‘Homeboys’ specialise in Japanese and pan-Asian street food, all served out of a refurbished 1978 American mail van.

Chinese inspired street food specialists and multi-award winning Dim Sum Su and Nuneaton based Urban Cheesecake make up two more members of the team.

Completing the lineup for “Team BHX” is Birmingham burger restaurant, Original Patty Men.

Co-founder of OPM, Scott O’Byrne, said:

We started our street food careers at the first ever Digbeth Dining Club back in 2012, so it’s a birthday celebration for us too.

Watching Digbeth Dining Club grow from just a couple of traders in a car park to the force in the industry that it is now has been brilliant, so it’s quite fitting that we’ll be there on the 11th, back where it all began.

Speaking of the event, founder of Digbeth Dining Club, Jack Brabant, said:

Our aim at DDC has always been to provide a platform for the best street food traders to cook quality and honest food for the people of the Midlands.

While this is obviously a friendly competition with our friends down in London, this is also a brilliant opportunity for our regulars to go up against the capital and showcase how brilliant the Midlands food scene really is.

We’re looking to make this a real celebration of all things London and Birmingham. Entertainment, bands and DJ’s will be provided by both cities, even the bars will be split down the middle, showcasing the best of the local breweries and distilleries.

Since its inception in 2012, KERB have been a pioneer for British street food, vowing to ‘bring together some of the most exciting cooking happening in London right now’.

In just six years, KERB have set up markets in Camden, Kings Cross, Paddington, West India Quay, St. Kats and the Gherkin, operating every single week.

Forming the eight members of “Team LDN” are Only Jerkin’, whose Caribbean inspired fried chicken has already swept away the people of the Midlands this year at Digbeth Dining Club. Indonesian BBQ heavyweights, Makatcha, Luxury Flats – who serve Ararat flatbreads with Koji fried chicken – and the self-proclaimed “Original Creators of Halloumi Fries” Oli Babas.

“Filthy Vegan Junk Food” specialists, Biffs Jack Shack – who were recommended by the Evening Standard as one of the best places in London to find vegan food will also be trading at the Digbeth Arena for the day. Camden Market residents Stakehaus and Bill or Beak will be trading alongside Smokin’ Lotus.

Managing Director of KERB, Simon Mitchell, said

KERB have been really excited to collaborate with a brand like Digbeth Dining Club for some time now. I think this collaboration gives us the opportunity to learn a lot from one another; but this is a battle and we hope our traders prevail!

Digbeth Dining Club’s 6th Birthday party will take place on Saturday, 11th August at the Digbeth Arena, from 12PM-10PM. Tickets start at just £5 and can be bought at https://bit.ly/2LyjDvQ
